Skill development in graduate education.
The process of training new PhDs is complex and has significant dropout rates associated with loss of financial and time investments by the student, mentor, and program. One approach to improve graduate education is to make explicit the skills students need to develop and to put in place mechanisms to develop those skills.

Current concerns over reforming engineering education have focused attention on helping students develop skills and an adaptive expertise. Phenomenological guidelines for instruction along these lines can be understood as arising out of an emerging theory of thinking and learning built on results in the neural, cognitive, and behavioral sciences. We outline this framework and consider some of i...

متن کاملViewpoint: Using Information Technology to Enhance Engineering Education*
This paper reviews three learning models and information technologies that can be used to support the effective application of these learning models in engineering higher education. The effectiveness of an information technology is analysed through the appropriateness of the technology in supporting a particular learning model. The mapping of information technologies to learning models identifi...
متن کاملOn generic skill development: An engineering perspective
This paper addresses ten generic skills set out by Engineers Australia from the engineering graduate perspective. Generic skills of electronic-engineering and civilengineering graduates are studied prior to graduation and after graduation. Detailed comparisons are made. Possible recommendations are also discussed.
